The Karthik Raj murder case had been one of the most sensational cases in the city, with three accused finally being acquitted due to lack of evidence. Karthik Raj, son of a former taluk panchayat member, was brutally assaulted and later died on October 23, 2017. The charge sheet pointed towards a misunderstanding between the siblings over a family issue.
The murder had taken a political turn with the infamous comment of Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel that the BJP would set fire to the district if police failed to nab the assailant of Karthik Raj at a protest rally outside Konaje police station.
