Jagdish Mewada, an avid lottery player, watched the movie Special 26 and was
inspired to deceive his uncle by posing as Income Tax officials. He trained five
friends to act as impostors by making them watch the movie at least five times.
The gang raided the house of Mewada's uncle and stole cash and valuables worth
₹1.65 crore.
However, when they halted on the pretext of taking a tea
break on the Western Express Highway, Mewada's uncle realized something was
amiss and reported to the Charkop police. Mewada was later taken into custody,
where he confessed to the crime and revealed the identity of his friends. The
seven other accused, all residents of Dharavi, were arrested, and a manhunt was
launched to nab the insider who tipped Mewada. All of them were booked under
Sections 395, 451, 170, 342 and 120 (b) and were remanded in police custody
until June 20.
