The Inside Story
College Student Arrested for Defamation through Fake Facebook Account
A 20-year-old girl, who is a final-year B.Sc student in a private college in Visakhapatnam, was arrested by the cyber crime investigation cell (CCIC) police on Thursday. The arrest was made on charges of defaming another girl student from the same college by creating a fake Facebook account and posting her pictures along with her phone numbers, accompanied by abusive comments.
According to CCIC inspector K. Satyanarayana Rao, the accused, Pollamuri Bhagya Sri Rama Amrutha, held a grudge against the victim, who was also a final-year B.Sc student, over a trivial issue, leading to frequent quarrels between them. Unaware of the seriousness of cyber crimes, Amrutha created a fake FB account in the victim's name to seek revenge, posting unsavoury comments and pictures.
The victim, upon discovering the fake account and the abusive content on Facebook, lodged a complaint with the IV town police station two months ago. Subsequently, the case was transferred to the CCIC for further investigation. The CCIC team, led by Inspector K. Satyanarayana Rao, tracked the case using the FB profile log details and user information, resulting in the arrest of Amrutha. The police seized a tablet PC, several SIM cards, and a mobile phone from her possession. Amrutha was charged under Section 66(A) and 66(C) of the IT Act 2000 and 2008.
