Mentally-challenged Woman Raped, Doctors Arrested for Bribery

A 22-year-old mentally-challenged woman was allegedly raped by a ward boy at a nursing home in Walhekarwadi, Chinchwad, near Pune, where she was undergoing treatment. The nursing home is owned by Dr. Vishal Sonawane (34) and his wife Dr. Varsha (31). Police arrested the accused, Subhash Modad (22), on charges of rape and the doctor couple for attempting to bribe the victim's kin to not report the incident to the police as it would harm their hospital's reputation.

Dr. Sonawane and his wife were charged with sections 213 and 214 of the Indian Penal Code for accepting bribes. Modad was charged with section 376 (d) for intercourse by a staff member of a hospital with a woman. The victim's father filed a complaint against the couple after they detained the suspect and offered a bribe to him.

The victim's medical examination conducted by a government hospital confirmed rape. Modad was remanded in police custody until April 26, while the doctor couple was remanded until April 21 by a local court.
