The case gained national attention as the court declared Singh's murder to be the rarest of rare cases. During the investigation, police discovered several articles belonging to Singh in the home of district panchayat member Phoolan Devi, who was married to Kalander. They also found human skulls and Singh's vehicle. Kalander revealed that he had buried 14 skulls in his home, where he had also kept the skulls of other victims he had killed.
Prosecutors described Kalander as a serial killer who killed to take revenge on his enemies and increase his mental power. He reportedly ate certain body parts of his victims, bailed their brains, and drank it. He also threw body parts before pigs at his farmhouse and hung the skulls on a tree, segregating them on the basis of their castes and pronouncing judgment on them.
Kalander's brother-in-law, Vakchharaj, actively assisted him in his activities, according to police records. Kalander committed his first murder in 1998, which continued until 2000 when he killed Singh. The court has now sentenced Kalander to death.
