Darjeeling Student's Courage and Presence of Mind Help Bust a Human Trafficking Racket
A class XI student from Darjeeling, Durga (name changed for security reasons), showed immense courage and presence of mind in busting a human trafficking racket and saving a victim from being trafficked. Aruna (name changed), a divorcee residing with her children in a tea garden in Darjeeling, was promised a job at a garment store in Delhi and was offered an all-expense-paid trip to Delhi. Durga, who had attended a workshop on trafficking in her school and sensing something fishy, called up the Delhi number and showed interest in taking up a job. As the conversations grew frequent, the man tried to lure Durga into giving her consent for the flesh trade. Durga informed the NGO and the police, who then lay a trap and arrested three men and a woman.
The NGO, which Durga had approached to help in this case, has also decided to hand over a cash award to this brave girl. The police arrested Vishal Labar of Toongsoong and Samir Thatal of Limboo Bustee, who were there to collect Durga and Aruna. Raju @ Navin Thapa and his wife Arantika Thapa were arrested from Siliguri. The couple originally hailing from Assam used to reside in a rented house in Sangati More, Siliguri. All four arrested, charged under Section 363 IPC (kidnapping) and under the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, were produced at the Darjeeling court and have been sentenced to 10 days of police remand.
The arrests have brought to light a trafficking gang operating in this region and also running a prostitution racket in Delhi. The Superintendent of Police, Darjeeling, Anant Kumar, stated that more arrests could be expected in the near future. The incident highlights the need for more awareness and education on human trafficking and the importance of the public reporting any suspicious activities to the authorities.
