The Inside Story
TCS Engineer Arrested for Extortion and Murder
Delhi, India
A 28-year-old electronics and communication engineer
employed by Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has been apprehended by the Crime
Branch for allegedly extorting Rs 7 lakh from a businessman. Shockingly, the
police discovered that the cellphone used by Bikramjit Singh to make the
extortion calls belonged to a woman he had killed. His motive was to acquire
funds for the murder of his lover's fiancé.
Singh, a resident of Paschim Vihar in West Delhi, completed his B.Tech in Electronics and Communication Engineering from IP University. He had been working with TCS in Gurgaon since January 2006. Police investigations revealed that Singh was romantically involved with a colleague who became engaged to another man eight months ago. Fueled by jealousy, Singh, who earned Rs 7 lakh per annum, believed that his lover left him for a more financially stable partner.
Unable to afford a professional hitman, Singh devised a plan involving extortion, targeting his neighbor. He was cautious about using his own cellphone for the calls, as he feared being traced. Instead, he decided to kill a woman he had befriended two years ago, a mother of two school-going children, and use her mobile phone to carry out the extortion scheme. Singh lured her to a meeting in Burari, stabbed her in the neck, and took her phone. He later disposed of the phone in a drain in Paschim Vihar after making the incriminating calls.
