Brother-in-law arrested for rape and murder of woman in Malad

Four months after the brutal murder, rape, and dumping of a woman's body in a creek at Malad, the police arrested her brother-in-law, his relative, and friend for the crime. The prime accused, Raees Qureshi, told the police that he raped his sister-in-law Ruby Qureshi after killing her out of spite. Raees' wife was friends with Ruby, but he felt humiliated by her and wanted to get intimate with her, which she refused. He was unhappy with Ruby marrying his brother Azad and was upset by her dominating nature.

The police found a naked decomposed body in a sack near a creek at Dharavli village, which they identified as Ruby's. Ruby and Azad had married four years ago in Delhi against their families' wishes and moved to Ambhujwadi in October 2015. Raees, a vegetable vendor, moved into the same neighbourhood later. Raees hatched a plan to eliminate Ruby and roped in his relative and friend. On January 3, he called Ruby to his place where the trio bludgeoned and strangled her. Raees then raped the corpse. To prevent the body from being identified, they undressed her and packed her body in a sack.

Raees kept changing his statements about Ruby's disappearance and tried to mislead investigators. He was arrested on May 21, and based on his confession, Isaq and Shabbir were held on Sunday. A magistrate's court has remanded them to police custody till May 27.
