Chembur, Maharashtra

Electrician arrested for murdering a senior citizen during a robbery

An electrician has been arrested for killing a 70-year-old woman at her Chembur residence during a robbery attempt. The accused, Mustak Khan, had entered the house with the intention of stealing valuables, but when the senior citizen tried to stop him, he smothered her to death.

The deceased, Chandrabhaga Kharat, was alone at home during the incident, and her family members were out on their respective duties. The accused had stolen valuables worth Rs 1,000 from the same house two months ago when he had done some electrical work in the deceased's residence.

In a bid to escape, Khan smothered the senior citizen with a pillow and then slit her throat with a sharp object. After investigations, the police team got a tip-off about Khan and brought him in for interrogation, where he confessed to the crime. A case has been registered under Sections 302 and 454 of the Indian Penal Code.

Kharat was staying with her son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter. Her son works as a rickshaw driver, daughter-in-law is a maid, and her granddaughter is a college student. She had come to the city just 15 days before the incident for an eye surgery.

The accused had already stolen something from the same place a few months ago, so he had a fair idea of the things inside the house. According to an officer, "The senior citizen heard the noise and immediately rushed and locked the door from inside." However, the accused managed to overpower her and commit the crime.

The accused has been identified as Mustak Khan (32), a resident of Govandi, and has been booked for murder and house trespassing.
