Stepmother booked for assaulting nine-year-old
An anonymous caller informed the police about the torture and abuse of a nine-year-old girl by her stepmother for the past two weeks at a posh housing complex in Kanjurmarg, Mumbai. The police rescued the girl and took her into the custody of the Child Welfare Committee. The stepmother, a 34-year-old woman, was booked for assault and abuse.
The minor girl lost her mother in 2012 and was living with her father in the Gundecha Height housing complex, who remarried four months ago. The young girl told the police that her stepmother would beat her with a cloth hanger, leaving over half a dozen pinch marks on her body. Her father, who is a senior official in a nationalized bank, did nothing to stop the abuse.
The stepmother has been booked under Section 324 and relevant sections of the Juvenile Justice Act, while the police are investigating if the father can be booked for abetment. The young girl is undergoing medical tests and is safe under the custody of the Child Welfare Committee.
