Karnataka Police Crack Abduction and Gang-Rape Case, Arrest Three Auto Drivers
A week after the abduction and gang-rape of a medical student in Manipal, Karnataka, the police have arrested all three culprits. The accused, Yogesh, Anand, and Harish, were all autorickshaw drivers. Two of the culprits had attempted to commit suicide, knowing that the police were on their trail. Yogesh even called the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) on his mobile phone and admitted to his involvement in the crime.
Yogesh's confession helped the police to track down his accomplices. Harish was arrested soon after Yogesh's arrest, and Anand was found hanging from a tree outside a village near Udupi. Passersby had informed the police about Anand's suicide attempt, which led to his discovery. Yogesh had recorded the entire incident on his mobile phone, according to Harish's confession.
The police have seized the auto used in the crime and have registered a criminal case against the culprits under sections 366 and 376 (abduction and rape) read with 34 (common intent) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) on a complaint by the victim. The heinous crime sparked off protests by students of the university, demanding the arrest of the culprits, stringent punishment, and better security measures.
Manipal is a major educational centre located 5 km from the famous Udupi temple town and about 410 km from Bangalore. The police had formed eight probe teams and announced a cash reward of Rs.2 lakh for vital information that could lead to the tracing of the accused and the auto-rickshaw used in the crime.
