13-year-old Mumbai girl raped by father for six years, mother ignored the abuse
A 13-year-old girl from Mumbai wrote a bone-chilling letter to her teacher revealing that her father had been raping her for six years. Shockingly, her mother remained silent about the abuse. The victim, a class VII student, gave the letter to her teacher, who sought assistance from a local NGO in Vashi. The NGO helped to register a rape case against the girl's parents.
The girl's 45-year-old father, a fruit vendor, had been raping her since she was seven years old. The girl said that whenever her brothers were not at home, her father would rape her in front of her mother. She had complained to her mother several times, but she never helped her. The girl had also informed her 17-year-old sister about the assault, and the police said that the elder sister had also been a victim of the father's sexual assault.
The girl was able to muster the courage to report the abuse after receiving a counselling session at school. The police have arrested the father and are investigating the mother's precise role. A case has been registered against both parents under Section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code, along with Section 5(L)(N) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012.
