Goa Teenager Raped by Mumbai Youth Promising Marriage
The perils of online friendships were evident when a teenage girl from Goa was allegedly raped by a 21-year-old youth from Mumbai whom she had met on a social networking site. The unemployed suspect, Sirtaj Ali, invited the 17-year-old girl to Mumbai under the pretext of marrying her, but instead, he sexually assaulted her before abandoning her at Kurla railway station.
Ali had formed a friendship with the girl on Facebook for six months before enticing her to Mumbai. Using a fake profile, he convinced her of his intention to marry her. The victim arrived in Mumbai on January 8 and was subjected to sexual assault over the following days. Ali, son of a scrap dealer, has been arrested and charged with rape and kidnapping.
The girl, who studies in class XI and hails from Canacona, Goa, left her home on the pretense of going to college but instead traveled to Mumbai. She met Ali at Kurla station, and he took her to a friend's house in Dharavi, where the assault took place. Afterward, he provided her with a burkha and a mangalsutra to deceive neighbors into believing they were married. The girl was eventually rescued by railway police personnel, and Ali was apprehended.
