Protests Erupt Demanding CBI Probe into Murder

Security has been heightened in all 13 districts of Uttarakhand following demonstrations by BJP workers and office-bearers. They burned effigies of Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna and other government functionaries, including Agriculture Minister Harak Singh Rawat. The protestors are demanding a recommendation to the central government for a CBI probe into the murder of Harak's former private secretary, Yudhvir Singh Rawat, allegedly orchestrated by Sudha Patwal.

32-year-old Sudha Patwal was arrested in Dehradun and confessed to her role in the murder during interrogation. She denied any close association with Harak and stated that she knew him only as a Congress worker. Patwal admitted to plotting Yudhvir's killing after he failed to return Rs 14 lakh paid to him for securing admission to a state government medical college. She also confessed to facilitating fake admissions in government medical colleges through middlemen over the years.

The BJP state unit, led by state chief Tirath Singh Rawat and opposition leader Ajay Bhatt, organized a state-wide stir in protest. Hundreds of BJP workers courted arrest and raised anti-government slogans, accusing the state government of shielding the actual culprits behind the murder. Chief Minister Bahuguna's refusal to recommend a CBI probe has fueled suspicions of a cover-up.
