Murder Suspect Arrested After Two Decades
Ganeshpeth police in Nagpur, Maharashtra, have obtained custody remand of Gaddamedi Kanakaraju Shankar, also known as Ramdas Maharaj or Datta Guru Maharaj, until July 23. Shankar had been on the run for nearly twenty years after allegedly murdering his wife and eldest daughter at a city hotel in October 1993.
After evading capture for so long, Shankar was apprehended by the Pune crime branch in May in Madhya Pradesh. He was also wanted by Pune police for the killing of another wife and her daughter in Hinjewadi. Shankar, who had been married three times, committed the first murders in a drunken state due to financial difficulties in supporting his family.
A self-proclaimed astrologer, Shankar had spent many years traveling between different temples across India before settling in Pune. There, he married Subhadra Chavan, who had three daughters from a previous marriage. However, during a domestic dispute, Shankar killed Subhadra and her eldest daughter, Vasanti, before fleeing to Indore. Following his arrest by Pune police and subsequent imprisonment, he was brought to Nagpur after custody was obtained through a production warrant.
