The Inside Story

Borivli Police Seek Sanction to Book Gopal Pandey and Five Aides Under MCOCA

The Borivli police in Mumbai have sought permission from Mumbai Police Commissioner Satyapal Singh to book Gopal Pandey and five others under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA). This comes after the joint commissioner sanctioned the police's application. The police are awaiting Singh's approval before invoking the act. The accused were charged with crimes like having a criminal background, being organized, and committing the crime for pecuniary gain.

The crime branch usually invokes the MCOCA because the investigation requires a dedicated team and hard work, which a local police station cannot provide due to their routine duties. In June this year, the crime branch had arrested six people, including Pandey, for kidnapping and murdering builder Nitin Dhakan. After the murder, the accused allegedly used Dhakan's debit card to go shopping and stole cash from his house.

Gopal Pandey confessed to the Borivli police that he was the prime accused in the kidnapping and murder case of Nitin Dhakan over a property dispute. All six suspects have been booked under sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including murder, kidnapping or abducting to murder, kidnapping or abducting with intent secretly and wrongfully, punishment for wrongful confinement, punishment of criminal conspiracy, and causing the disappearance of evidence of the offense.
